Granville Sharp Pattison and Nathaniel Chapman Finding Aid(2024-05-03) Wink, TaraThis document is the finding aid for the collection of pamphlets relating to the dispute between Drs. Granville Sharp Pattison and Nathaniel Chapman. This collection contains pamphlets relating to the personal and professional disagreements between Dr. Granville Sharp Pattison and Dr. Nathaniel Chapman from 1820 to 1821. It is believed that these disparaging pamphlets lead to a duel between Dr. Pattison and General Thomas Cadwalader, the brother-in-law of Dr. Chapman in April 1823.Item W.H. This collection contains seven volumes of lecture notes taken by William H. Kunst during his time as a student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) from 1887 to 1890. The volumes include two courses in Surgery with Dr. L. [Louis] McLane Tiffany, two courses in Physiology with F.T. [Francis Turquand] Miles, two courses in Materia Medica with I.E. [Isaac Edmondson] Atkinson, and one course with S.C. The Dr. Harris Chaiklin Papers Collection contains papers, publications, and presentations relating to Chaiklin’s career in Social Work. The majority of the materials relate to Dr. Chaiklin’s time at the University of Maryland School of Social Work and his research with individuals in correctional institutions. The papers date from 1944 to 2014.Item Susan H. Hadary DVD Collection Finding Aid(2022-08-08) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Susan H. Hadary DVD Collection, which contains 50 DVDs of documentaries produced by Hadary. The documentaries tend to focus on medical topics such as the health and care of older people or those with disabilities, trauma medicine, mental health issues, and addiction. Other documentaries focus on youth in West Baltimore. The documentaries were produced for the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Discovery Channel, Maryland Public Television, and HBO. The collection includes several documentaries which were nominated for Emmy and Academy Awards as well as winners of both prestigious prizes including King Gimp, Grace, and Departing Rosewood.Item George F. Arie, a student at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, MD from 1890 to 1892. Kaplan Papers. Dr. Abraham Nathan Kaplan was a general practitioner from Brooklyn, New York. The Abraham Nathan Kaplan Papers contain class notes from his time at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) dating from 1929 to 1931, biographical information dating from 1929 to 1997, and patient medical records dating from 1979 to 1985. The class notes cover Physiology, Preventative Medicine, Mental Hygiene, Clinical Medicine, Psychiatry, as well as Ear, Nose and Throat courses. The medical records are restricted.Item John J. Greenwood Papers Finding Aid(2021-04) Brown, ElizabethThis document is the finidng aid for the John J. Greenwood Papers. The papers contain letters of introduction written on behalf of John J. Greenwood and other documentation relating to his travel in Europe in order to study dentistry. It includes letters of his family including J. Greenwood, Esq., Eliza Jane Greenwood, and Isaac J. Greenwood.Item Dr. Eduard Uhlenhuth Papers Finding Aid(2020-12-11) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Dr. Eduard Uhlenhuth Papers. Dr. Eduard Uhlenhuth was a professor of Anatomy at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 1925 until his retirement in 1955. In 1957 he was named professor emeritus. He was an avid book collector amassing an extensive collection of Anatomy Texts for the department during his tenure. This collection includes correspondence about the purchase of these texts as well as publications about the collection. In addition to the Anatomy books, the papers include biographical materials and publications. The majority of the Department of Anatomy Book collection remains in the Historical Collections Department.Item Turner Cordell Family Papers Finding Aid(2020-10-22) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Turner Cordell Family Papers. The Turner and Cordell Families were wealthy, influential, southern families connected through the marriage of Dr. Levi O’Connor Cordell and Christine Turner. The collection, while documenting the families generally, contains a majority of materials documenting Christine Turner Cordell and her son, Dr. Eugene F. Cordell. A large portion of the collection are letters from Christine Turner Cordell and Dr. Eugene F. Cordell. Christine’s letters are written during her childhood documenting her life in Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia); education in private schools; her marriage to Dr. Levi Cordell; and their children. Dr. Eugene F. Cordell’s letters fall into two categories: his career in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War and his professional and personal life as a physician and educator in Baltimore, Maryland. The remaining materials present insight into the life and experiences of two wealthy, well-connected, slave-owning families in the American South before and during the Civil War, as well as, the ancestral and genealogical research into the families completed by Dr. E. F. Cordell. In addition, the collection contains provenance materials, documenting the purchase and donation of the materials to the Health Sciences Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.Item Willard M. Hillegeist Historical Research on the University of Maryland Collection Finding Aid(2020-08) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Willard M. Hillegeist Historical Research on the University of Maryland Collection. The collection includes notes and materials collected by Willard M. Hillegeist. As registrar and later Director of Admissions to the University of Maryland, Hillegeist was tasked to write the history of the University of Maryland. At the time of his research, College Park and Baltimore were one University; therefore, the items in this collection tell the history of both the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The collection also includes proofs of historical publications written by Hillegeist.Item Willard M. Hillegeist Collection of the Maryland Commission on Scholarships for Negroes Records Finding Aid(2020-07) Wink, TaraThe finding aid describes the Willard M. Hillegeist Collection of Maryland Commission on Scholarships for Negroes Records. The Maryland Commission on Scholarships for Negroes was created by the Maryland State General Assembly of 1937, Chapter 506. The Commission was set up to continue the practice of segregation in the state’s University of Maryland. The commission administered scholarships for African American students to attend schools outside of Maryland and considered whether or not Morgan College should become a state institution. This collection of materials was created by Willard M. Hillegeist, a member of the commission and University of Maryland Director of Admissions. The collection contains materials that describe the business of the commission and provides insight into the higher education of African Americans in Maryland prior to desegregation.Item Dr. Milford “Mickey” M. Foxwell, Jr.’s Collection of Lecture Notes Finding Aid(2020-06-01) Wink, TaraThe finding aid describes the Dr. Milford M. Foxwell, Jr. Collection of Lecture Notes. This collection contains lecture notes collected by Dr. Milford M. Foxwell, Jr., University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Class of 1980, from courses with influential faculty members from the UMSOM and Washington Medical College of Baltimore, including Dr. Nathan Ryno Smith and Dr. Nathaniel Potter. It includes a series of lectures by Dr. John C.S. Monkur, Professor of Theory and Practice at Washington University of Baltimore, Medical Department. Finally, the collection contains a casebook with medical diagnoses of Dr. Cosmo G. Stevenson, a doctor in Baltimore.Item Health Sciences and Human Services Library Records Finding Aid(2019-12) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Health Sciences and Human Services Library Records. The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) is one of two libraries on the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s campus. The library traces its history back to 1813 and is believed to be the oldest library attached to a School of Medicine in the country. This collection contains materials from the HS/HSL including photographs, newsletters, and annual reports. The collection includes materials on the planning and building of two library buildings, as well as anniversary celebrations. The collection provides a glimpse into the history of the library and the University.Item Baltimore College of Dental Surgery Letters Finding Aid(2019-12) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery Letters. The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery Letters contains letters relating to the administrative business of the school. The letters are dated across the leadership dates of four deans: Ferdinand J.S. Gorgas (1865-1882), Richard B. Winder (1882-1894), M. Whillden Foster (1895-1913), and William G. Foster (1914-1923). Most letters contain inquiries about admittance to the school, tuition costs, textbooks, letters of reference, and other academic affairs. Other letters regard the deans’ editorship of academic dental journals and the business affairs of the school, including bills and receipts for dental supplies and utilities.Item Health Sciences Library Medical Stamp Collection Finding Aid(2019-12) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Health Sciences Library Medical STamp Collection. This collection contains postal and commemorative stamps of a variety of well-known and lesser-known medical and charitable organizations. The collection dates from 1937 to 1972. The stamps were used to raise awareness and funds for the organizations and/or commemorative an influential event or person in the medical world. Robinson Papers contains materials from her tenure as Director of the Health Sciences Library of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The collection contains professional correspondence, biographical materials, and professional materials surrounding Robinson’s life and career. The collection provides insight into library and professional organization administration as well as the history of the University and the library. The materials date from 1954 to 1988 but the majority fall between 1959 and 1963.Item Ruth Lee Briscoe Papers Finding Aid(2019-12) Wink, TaraThis finding aid describes the Ruth Lee Briscoe Papers. The Ruth Lee Briscoe Papers contains the professional and personal papers of Ruth Lee Briscoe, long-serving librarian and director of the Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Briscoe served the library from 1914 to 1946 as the first professionally trained librarian. During her tenure the library changed and grew. Briscoe was an avid researcher and routinely published pieces in the School of Medicine’s Bulletin. The collection provides insight into the library history at the University of Maryland, Baltimore through the lens of a long-serving library director and well-respected member of the school; it also provides insight into library history generally as well as historical events at the University.Item Hilda E. Moore Papers contains professional and personal materials from Moore’s life and time as librarian and director at the University of Maryland at Baltimore’s Health Sciences Library. The articles are published and written between 1964 and 1989.Item Cyril C.H. Feng Papers Finding Aid(2019-05) Wink, TaraThe finding aid describes the Cyril C.H. Feng Papers. Most of the materials in the Cyril C.H. Feng Papers come from Feng’s time as director of the University of Maryland at Baltimore Health Sciences Library from 1977 to 1990. They provide a glimpse into the business of the Health Sciences Library during a time of growth and reorganization and medical library administration generally. Feng was especially interested in integrated library systems.
