Description
Each version of this image is undated, but believed to be c. 1780-1785. The painter of the original image was the Italian Francesco Maggiotto. File named dent_041 includes captions in Italian beneath the image ; engraved by the anonymous “A.S,” this version depicts the figures in the frame posed facing to our left, which is the reverse of both the other versions ; original piece measures 49 X 37 cm. File named dent_045 was drawn by Carlo Paroli and engraved by Amad Gabrieli ; includes captions in Italian as well as an alternate French title L’Arracheur de Dents beneath the image ; original piece measures 51 X 36 cm. File named dent_050 was engraved by Giovanni Volpato (1735-1803) and Nicolo Cavalli (1730-1822), of Venice ; original piece measures 38 X 29 cm. The following statement appears in Le Dentiste D’Autrefois : 60 Reproductions, annotées par Georges Dagen (Paris : Editions de la Revue “La Semaine Dentaire” [no date]): “This is truly a classic mountebank stage, with the familiar monkey, the sign-board which spreads the fame of the operator, the table with ointments, and the chief subject : the pain of one and the attention of the other.” Source: Piperno collection.
