Samuel, Sheena2025-05-272025-05-272025-05https://archive.hshsl.umaryland.edu/handle/10713/23628Problem: Childhood obesity rates have tripled in the last few decades, and the United States (US) now has one of the highest childhood obesity rates with one out of every three children measuring as either overweight or obese (Harvard., 2016). In a privately owned pediatrician’s office, in the mid-Atlantic region an audit of 200 patient charts revealed 12% of patients had a body mass index (BMI) of either overweight or obese. This shows that in this clinic there is an opportunity for growth in promoting better lifestyle choices. Purpose: This quality improvement project aims to promote obesity treatment adherence among pediatric patients in a pediatric clinic by implementing a standardized approach to obesity health promotion. 5210 guidance is a validated tool that promotes a comprehensive approach to healthy habits and has impacted families to make lifestyle changes. The initiative will be implemented over a 15-week period in the fall of 2024. Methods: Data collection tools to measure the goals of this project are the 5210 questionnaires, which measure healthy habits at baseline and post intervention. The 5210-bingo sheet will measure weekly changes made and the last tool will keep records of BMI, medical record number (MRN), measurement date and age group. All this information with be entered into REDCap ©, a VPN protected survey tool that protects patient privacy. Results: In total, thirteen patients participated in the pre-implementation phase and seven patients came back to follow up for the post implementation phase. 57% of patients who followed up were able to meet at least two of the 5210 goals and although 42% were unable to meet this goal, they were able to maintain the same number of healthy habits from the pre-implementation phase. The most common goals met were two hours of screen time and zero sugary drinks and the least met goal was 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. Conclusions: Overall, using a standardized approach for obesity health promotion was seen to help patients improve adherence to the treatment plan and meet some of the projected lifestyle goals.
