Abstract

Veterans have long contributed to the U.S. workforce, but both their population and labor force size have been contracting significantly over time. At the same time, labor force participation rates among veterans have declined more rapidly than those of nonveterans, reflecting pronounced population aging dynamics within the veteran community. While this shift has led to a reduced presence of veterans in overall employment, this subgroup maintains educational qualifications comparable to those of nonveterans, demonstrating their wide range of skills. These findings are particularly relevant for employers and workforce strategists because they underscore both the shifting landscape of veteran employment and the opportunities that exist to engage a highly skilled segment of the U.S. workforce. This snapshot will examine several metrics that describe characteristics of the U.S. veteran population and labor force. Below are some key terms that will appear in this snapshot:
