Abstract

Background: This NSP II-funded grant, currently in year three of four, is intended to impact clinical education of nursing students. The clinical experience impacts future nursing practice while negative experiences adversely affect nursing practice (Tang & Chan, 2019). A strong academic partnership with hospitals increases nursing student satisfaction and their experience (Lapinski & Ciurzynski, 2020). Objectives: The stated aims of the grant are: 1) to partner with Stevenson University and local hospitals to increase the quality of clinical experiences and, 2) to increase the number of new graduate nurses hired by those institutions. Methods: The grant aims to provide nursing students the highest quality clinical experience by having their clinical rotation at a hospital in which their Clinical Supervisor (CS) is employed. Results: This academic year, Stevenson University employed 26 grant hospital CSs; an increase of nine from the previous two years. There were 11 returning grant CS this Academic Year. At the completion of the fall 2023 semester, students were given a survey to rate their clinical experience. On a Likert scale, 5 being the best experience and 1 being the worst experience; fifty-four (54) responses were received. Forty (40) students who had a grant hospital CS replied and of the 40 responses, 88% of students rated their clinical experience a 3, 4, or 5. Conclusion: Employing more grant CS can directly impact the clinical experience for nursing students.
