Abstract
Background: Our institution has designed and implemented Psychiatric Skills Simulation. Methods: Eight students at a time rotate through six various psychiatric nursing skills. These skills include bag safety checks for a new admission (SP); four-point restraints care for a psychotic patient (SP); difficult topics interview with a patient with borderline disorder(SP), opioid withdrawal assessment of a patient with opioid use disorder (SP), psychiatric nursing report from a nurse educator with a discussion of acuity and priority concerns and a hearing voices simulation where students perform tasks while listening with earbuds to auditory hallucinations simulating a psychotic patient’s experience. Rotations of two students per group of eight conduct each of four of the skills (1) bags check, (2) 4-point restraint, (3) difficult topics, and (4) opioid withdrawal while the remaining six students per group observe. The students receive feedback from the SPs and their peers. The entire group of eight participate equally during the psych nursing report and hearing voices simulation. Following the rotation through six stations, the students participate in a debriefing with the nursing educators. Learning points related to the nursing process and the various psychiatric disorders are discussed. Psych Skills Lab allows 48 students to experience eight hours of simulation in one day. Each phase of the six experiences and details regarding each of the six stations follows. Sample test questions follow each of the six sections.
