Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, and nurses are uniquely positioned to lead this shift with clinical expertise, ethical clarity, and compassion. From predictive alerts and ambient documentation to chatbots and decision support tools, AI is becoming part of everyday clinical practice. But nurses are more than end-users, they should be a strong voice in shaping how this technology is applied, trusted, and improved. This session provides a clear, non-technical overview of how AI is being used in healthcare and nursing today, drawing from real-world examples and insights from advanced training with the American Board of AI in Medicine (ABAIM). Core AI concepts like machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI will be explained through nursing-focused case studies that highlight both the benefits and risks of implementation. Crucially, the session centers on ethical, human-centered AI. AI tools can amplify bias if not carefully managed, especially in underserved populations. Nurses must be empowered to ask, “Whose data is missing?” and “Who is this tool really serving?” We will explore known challenges, including biased algorithms, AI "hallucinations," outdated training data, and the environmental cost of large language models. Attendees will leave with a foundational understanding of AI in healthcare, plus practical tools for ensuring responsible use, such as bias checklists, transparency practices, and roles nurses can play on clinical AI review boards or ethics teams. When nurses lead AI adoption, technology doesn't just get smarter, healthcare gets more human.
