Abstract

Background: There is a growing need for entry-to-practice nurses to have developed critical thinking and clinical judgment skills prior to graduation. Significant evidence in the literature suggests that new graduate nurses are not practice-ready upon graduation, which has prompted the development of the National Council for State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Clinical Judgment Measurement Model and the nextgeneration NCLEX. Additionally, there have been calls to transform undergraduate nursing curricula towards competency-based education (CBE), which more accurately measures students’ readiness for practice (AACN, 2024). Innovative practice approaches are needed to prepare students to be safe, competent nurses. This project supports the needs in Maryland for combating the nursing shortage and delivering a more diverse workforce. Objectives: Schools of Nursing have a responsibility to engage in continuous program improvement and to measure student achievement of program outcomes. While the curriculum, including didactic courses, clinical experiences, and simulations do align with the student learning outcomes, there was not an evaluation in place to systemically evaluate whether students have achieved these upon graduation. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) (2018) recommends a systematic process be used to determine program effectiveness. This need prompted faculty to be creative in developing a new experience for students to demonstrate they had met program outcomes in the final semester of the entry-level program. Methods: We developed an End of Program Evaluation experience for fourth-semester students, which evaluates each students’ ascertainment of the BSN student learning outcomes. The School of Nursing program outcomes are represented as Valued Ends, or ends that reflect the philosophy and mission of the SON, and the values graduates should exemplify. Students completed a patient encounter where they were required to do an assessment, medication administration, a nursing intervention, and patient teaching. Students were evaluated using a tool based on the valued ends by SON faculty. Results: The purpose of this project was to obtain program effectiveness data. Students are successful in this end-of- program evaluation when they meet all six valued ends/program outcome criteria on the evaluation tool. The benchmark set by these authors was that 80% of students would be successful in the competency. The data collection in this project is ongoing.
