Abstract
Background: In their 19th Report to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the United States Congress, the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice cites training and support for nurse preceptors as one of many strategies to address current nursing workforce challenges. Institutions of higher education are poised to answer this call through the establishment of Dedicated Education Units (DEU) that focus equally on student learning and the development of preceptors employed by practice partners. Methods: The Maryland Nursing Workforce Center (MNWC) in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) and Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center established a DEU in January 2022. Within this innovative academic-practice partnership, preceptors and students work as dyads directed by the clinical instructor. UMSON faculty provide preceptor orientation and ongoing training to prepare registered nurses for the preceptor role. Preceptors focus on developing student clinical skills, critical thinking, and clinical judgment. The clinical instructor serves as a collaborator, mentor, and coach to the preceptor as they deliver student instruction. Results: Every semester, preceptors are evaluated using the Clinical Preceptor Experience Evaluation Tool (CPEET). Results consistently demonstrate satisfaction with the mentorship and support provided by the clinical instructor. Preceptors find that their role in the DEU is rewarding and makes their nursing practice more interesting. CPEET results also highlight that the experience of precepting serves as a mechanism for the expansion of preceptor professional knowledge. Preceptors shared challenges related to the time-consuming nature of the role and have requested additional support with developing teaching strategies to motivate learners. Recommendations: Academic and healthcare organizations should consider the DEU model to support workforce development. Implementing a DEU creates an environment of support for the students, and staff nurse preceptors. As academia and practice continue to partner with innovative and practical solutions for preparing the future nursing workforce, the Dedicated Education Unit is an effective option that supports shared goals.
