Abstract
This was a poster presentation at the 2025 EAPA International Conference in San Francisco.
Workplaces are changing rapidly due to artificial intelligence, globalization, and new work styles. To adapt and thrive, employees need stronger resilience skills. As a result, more organizations are turning to supportive resilience training and coaching. For EA professionals, it’s important to tailor support not only to individuals, but also to differences in generation and career stage. Our study looked at how resilience coaching works for different age groups. We used a proprietary, validated framework (Resilie® Coaching) originally developed by the internal EAP team at Transport for London and adapted for Japanese employees. After measuring six components of resilience -- inner strength, harness thinking, apply yourself, nurture connection, self-control, and lifestyle -- the program uses specific tools to help individuals and organizations build resilience, to bend without breaking, and emerge stronger from difficult situations. It focuses on transforming adversity into a catalyst for growth by developing adaptive skills, leveraging protective resources, and making preventive choices to strengthen one’s ability to navigate challenges effectively. The research effort followed 238 employees, measuring their resilience before and after coaching activities. The youngest group (ages 18-24) showed the biggest overall improvement, especially in the self-control category. Older employees (45 and above) grew most in the area of apply yourself, by learning to re-engage with work and share life lessons from past crises such as the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011. These findings suggest that resilience coaching affects each generation differently. Understanding these patterns allows EA counselors provide more targeted, meaningful and age-appropriate support. Further research will continue to explore how EAPs and the Resilie® Coaching approach can strengthen resilience across the workforce.
