Abstract

Entrepreneurial ecosystems are often framed as engines of innovation and opportunity, yet the support structures that shape them continue to produce disproportionate outcomes for marginalized founders. While Business Development Programs and Entrepreneur Support Organizations invest heavily in financial and educational resources, they rarely address the relational inequities that determine whose ideas gain traction, visibility, and support. Social capital is the missing piece that continues to be overlooked. Drawing on existing literature and a case example from the StarTUp at the Armory, this manuscript examines how the uneven distribution of social, human, and financial capital shapes entrepreneurial outcomes for marginalized founders. The analysis highlights persistent gaps in program design, representation, and relational infrastructure that limit mobility, belonging, and long-term success. To address these challenges, the manuscript proposes two equity-centered interventions, a Community Mentor Interest Form and a Speaker Selection Rubric, that offer transparent, scalable strategies for diversifying networks and expanding opportunities. Together, these recommendations outline a framework for rebuilding entrepreneurial ecosystems by structuring equitable social capital pathways that empower underrepresented founders and advance more inclusive patterns of access and success.
