Abstract

The finding aid describes the Saint Apollonia Artwork Collection. It was curated by librarians in the Dental and Pharmacy Library until the 1960s when the individual school libraries were combined. After that point the collection was curated by Librarians in the Health Sciences and Human Services Library . The collection was part of a larger artwork collection in the Dental and Pharmacy Library before being separated into the Saint Apollonia Collection. The collection contains engravings, prayer cards, wood cuts, and paintings as well as photographs and reproductions.

Saint Apollonia is the patron saint of dentists and those suffering from toothaches. The artwork in this collection depicts Saint Apollonia and her martyrdom in 249 AD.

Description
The collection dates from 1493 to 1939 and includes undated artwork. The collection was part of the larger Dental-Pharmacy Library Collection which was transferred to the HSHSL when the campus libraries were combined in the 1960s. At some time the artwork depicting Saint Apollonia was separted out and digitized as a standalone collection, so the collection was kept separate from the rest of the Dental-Pharmacy Library artwork and is described in this finding aid. The Saint Apollonia Artwork Collection contains original and reproduction engravings, wood cuts, etchings, paintings, etc. depicting Saint Apollonia and her martyrdom. The collection is open for research; interested researchers should contact the historical collections librarian for an appointment or use the digitized items in the Saint Apollonia Artworks Collection in the Digital Archive.
