The School of Medicine required a dissertation as partial fulfillment of the M.D. degree beginning with the school’s early years. The HS/HSL holds an extensive collection of these original manuscripts dating from 1813-1887. These manuscripts described as an “Inaugural Dissertation” or an “Inaugural Essay” were written on subjects chosen by the students. The individual manuscripts were bound together during the 1940’s. It was discovered during the digitization project that the tables of contents included in the bound volumes contained a number of errors in authors’ names, titles, and dates. A corrected table of contents was created and included in the volumes.
