The 2004 conference investigated the death of Heinrich Schliemann, pioneer in archaeology, who suffered from recurring ear aches and intermittent deafness for which he occasionally sought medical advice. His health history, treatment for his ear ailments, and final days traveling from Paris to Naples where he collapsed and died are discussed. Dr. Staecker concludes that the cause of death was due to a temporal lobe abscess.
