President's White Paper Project: The State of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at UMB: Leveraging Inclusive Leadership to Develop and Implement EDI-Informed CurriculumIt is the responsibility of an anchor institution like UMB to address structural oppression head-on and to act on issues of EDI from an anti-racism and anti-oppression perspective. In this spirit, we the President’s Fellows embarked on a journey of research and interviews to determine the state of EDI at UMB, and best practices that can be integrated on the student, faculty, and staff levels to demonstrate the institution's commitment to EDI-informed curriculum, and inclusive leadership. We acknowledge the work that has been done up to this point at UMB, and we provide strategies for UMB to implement for the future.

President's White Paper Project: Health Literacy as a Social Determinant of HealthPromoting social justice and health is an important focus of the 2017-2021 strategic plan for the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB, 2018). From this perspective, UMB’s commitment to these values was clear when it tasked a team of nine students, representing the seven professional schools at UMB and the University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP), with examining health literacy as a social determinant of health. The appointed students developed a list of recommendations for UMB to address health literacy as a social determinant of health and use an empathetic, interprofessional approach to meet the campus’ and surrounding communities’ health literacy needs. The mission of this paper is to establish health literacy as an important public health issue at UMB, UMCP, and in local communities.

President's White Paper Project: Implementing Core ValuesAccountability, civility, collaboration, diversity, excellence, leadership, and knowledge are the core values that guide all policies, practices, and procedures within the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). UMB is unique in that it consists of seven schools functioning as one university. When we came together, seven students representing each of the schools within UMB, our charge was to evaluate how our respective schools, and the university at large, institutionalize all seven of the established core values. Drawing on each of our unique backgrounds, we examined how UMB integrates the core values across each of the seven schools to embody its motto of “Seven schools, one university”. As a result of this assessment, we were asked to provide actionable recommendations that continue to prioritize UMB’s core values.

President's White Paper Project: Addressing Gun Violence: UMB’s Role as an Anchor InstitutionOur charge was simple: use an interprofessional lens to investigate the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) role as an anchor institution in addressing gun violence. Drawing from different professional and cultural backgrounds, we challenge the UMB campus and Baltimore community audiences to consider our intersectional and interprofessional analysis and assessment of the complexities surrounding gun violence, and to take action now.
