The following statement appears in Le Dentiste D’Autrefois : 60 Reproductions, annotées par Georges Dagen (Paris : Editions de la Revue “La Semaine Dentaire” [no date]): “The artist, under the comical title of ‘The Balm of Steel’ presents the dentist extracting a tooth in a rather studied position, but the phisiognomies are well observed and extremely well drawn ; this was his whole ambition; he has attained his object completely.” Lithograph, number 33 in Boilly’s series of 96 works under the title “Les Grimaces.” Original piece measures 34 X 26 cm. Image file titled dent_103 is a copy of a smaller colored engraving derived from the same original work, measuring 10 X 9 cm.en_US
