Undated copper engraving signed by Aegidius Sadeler, from the drawing by Maarten de Vos, circa early 17th Century. Unusual, in that rather than the customary depiction of Saint Apollonia as a young girl with delicate features, she appears older and more roughened in visage. She holds a martyr's palm in the crook of her right arm. In the foreground are an opened book, a bundle of brushwood twigs, and dental forceps surrounded by extracted teeth. The background depicts a scene in which soldiers pursue the fleeing saint voluntarily leaping into the burning fire of her martyrdom. Beneath the main image is a Latin inscription which reads "Carnem calcauit vitam complexa pudicam, eqz rogo in caelos fertur Apollonia." Original piece measures 18 X 13 cm.en_US
