dc.description.abstractDr. Gideon B. Smith graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1840. Smith had an active career in newspapers, entomology, and as an inventor and entrepreneur prior to attending and graduating from medical school. He also studied Cicadas from 1817 until his death in 1867 and is credited with identifying the cycle of the 17-year cicada or Brood X.en_US
