Description
A brightly hand-colored 19th-century British satirical caricature depicting a frantic dental extraction inside a domestic room or office. In the center, a short, balding practitioner wearing a blue coat and white stockings stands on a small red footstool, aggressively pulling a tooth from a woman seated in a high-backed wooden chair. The patient, wearing a ruffled white nightcap tied with a pink ribbon and a long yellow skirt, flails her legs out in agony, knocking against a nearby wooden washstand. The room is densely filled with humorous details:
Left side: A wooden bookcase filled with books bearing satirical titles (such as Treatise on Tooth Powder & Brushes, Frankenstein, Tales of the Devil, and Miseries of Human Life) sits above a chest of drawers where several pairs of false teeth are displayed.
Right side: A small dog barks beneath the tilted washstand, which holds a washing basin, a hand mirror, and dental tools. A large window in the background shows extracted teeth hanging on strings like window displays, and a large mirror reflects the back of the struggle.
Bottom Margins: The lower-left corner reads, "A. Bird invt. G Cruikshank fecit". The central title reads, "Tugging at a [High crossed out] Eye - Tooth". The lower-right corner includes the publication line, "Pubd by G. Humphrey. 27 St James's St London / Novr 1 1821". Original piece measures 21 X 26 cm.
