Letter from James Carroll to Jennie Carroll on January 8, 1901

In this letter from James Carroll to his wife Jennie Carroll sent from Camp Columbia Cuba, where he is stationed for the United States Yellow Fever Commission, Carroll informs Jennie that he has only $10.00 to his credit at the bank. The cakes she sent had arrived in Cuba and there was a 50 cents charge to pay on it. Carroll writes that he visited with Mrs. General Ward and was embarrassed that he had to wear khakis instead of a black uniform. He also tells Jennie that he has eaten for several days at the experimental camp which has been renamed to Camp Lazear. Additionally, he describes the food he has been eating. Finally, Carroll states that he may be going back in February and that Mrs. Reed may come down and return with Reed in April. This, Carroll says, would "throw the college course on to me."
