Description
Exact date and origin unknown, but believed possibly to be based on originals by Cornelis Galle the elder. These two representations are mirror images of one another, and nearly identical except for minor variations in engraved lines and texture. Image file #58 depicts Saint Apollonia holding a martyr's palm in her left hand and dental forceps with an extracted tooth in her right hand, and she is turned toward her right. The verso is partly obscured, but is a prayer card with text in Dutch. The year 1824 is visible within the text, suggesting that the piece is not the original work dating from Galle's time. Image file #59 depicts Saint Apollonia holding a martyr's palm in her right hand and dental forceps with an extracted tooth in her left hand, and she is turned toward her left. The verso is partly obscured, but again, there is enough visible text printed on the back such as to suggest a font style much later than Galle's time. Mounted on matboard. Original pieces each measure 10 X 7 cm.
