Abstract
This article will trace the history of certification in Employee Assistance with special attention to the origin and evolution of credentialing and licensing in the field. To understand this evolution, some of the more salient questions will be addressed: *What are the distinct 'parameters of practice' for the employee assistance professional? *Is the Current Employee Assistance Certification, or CEAP, constructed broadly and strongly enough to support the profession's climb to the level of licensure? *Should licensure exist only for individual Employee Assistance Professionals or should it be extended to EAP programs themselves?
