Description
Undated copper engraving signed by Aegidius Sadeler, from the drawing by Maarten de Vos, circa early 17th Century. Unusual, in that rather than the customary depiction of Saint Apollonia as a young girl with delicate features, she appears older and more roughened in visage. She holds a martyr's palm in the crook of her right arm. In the foreground are an opened book, a bundle of brushwood twigs, and dental forceps surrounded by extracted teeth. The background depicts a scene in which soldiers pursue the fleeing saint voluntarily leaping into the burning fire of her martyrdom. Beneath the main image is a Latin inscription which reads "Carnem calcauit vitam complexa pudicam, eqz rogo in caelos fertur Apollonia." Original piece measures 18 X 13 cm.
