Description
John Crawford held the position of Lecturer On Natural History in the College of Medicine of Maryland, the original name for the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Crawford's research and his earlier experiences in tropical medicine led him to advance the theory of parasitism, the notion that diseases were caused by the action of living infectious organisms invading the body. This was a radical line of thought, one which dramatically opposed the prevailing theories of the time, and led to his ostracism from the medical profession.
