Description
This presentation provides a summary of three surveys of young adults about romantic relationships and factors affecting the potential for stability or dissolution of the relationship (breakup). The life context of having one's parents divorce was examined as one of these factors. Multiple social psychology research measures were used in the study from personality to social exchange theory concepts. The sample sizes were n=608, n=421 and n=229 and all were students at the University of Minnesota. About a third of each sample had parents who had divorced. Results found that: 1) parental divorce was associated with more divorce in their own family network; 2) parental divorce had few associations with romantic experiences and romantic beliefs.
