Description
Title derived from reference sources. A pair of similar mezzotints attributed to James Wilson, supposedly after a painting by Aveline the Younger. Undated, but believed to be c. 1780. The following statement appears in Le Dentiste D’Autrefois : 60 Reproductions, annotées par Georges Dagen (Paris : Editions de la Revue “La Semaine Dentaire” [no date]): “An engraver of the name of Aveline was a member of the academy of painters of Paris, 1710-1760, he has also a brother who was an engraver. The blacksmith, the ancient competitor of the tooth puller, works in his forge which is almost transformed into an operating room. This picture have [sic] been engraved with some alterations by Negger, Dikson, Wilson, John Collier said : Tim Bobbyn." Original pieces each measure 34 X 27 cm.
