Description
Steel engraving after an original 1496 painting by Pietro Vannucci detta Perugino. An inscription beneath the main image credits G. Canuti as artist and G. Rosaspina as engraver. An Italian caption beneath the main image identifies the saints. At the top of the image, the Madonna holds the infant Jesus on her lap, surrounded by two angels and a series of cherubs. Saint Apollonia appears holding dental forceps in her left hand. Accompanying Saint Apollonia are Saint Michael the Archangel in his battle armor, Saint Catherine, with the wheel of her martyrdom showing behind her, and Saint John the Evangelist, with his emblem of an eagle behind him. Mounted on matboard ; undated, but believed likely to be early 19th Century. Original piece measures 27 X 17 cm.
