Description
John J. Greenwood was a dentist who practiced in the nineteenth century. He came from a family of European-American dentists. His great-grandfather Isaac Greenwood was the first dentist to practice in the European colonies. His acclaimed grandfather John Greenwood (1790-1819) was a veteran of the Revolutionary War who served as President George Washington’s dentist.
Letters and materials date from 1830 to 1846. The majority of materials date 1830-31.
Before dental education was formalized through schools, it was common for experienced dentists to take on students to teach them the profession. A dentist or family member would write letters of introduction to speak to the student's abilities asking the professional to take on the student. John J. Greenwood came from an experienced dental family and the letters in this collection suggest he went to Europe continue the family profession and study dentistry.
