Description
The death of Oliver Cromwell was the subject of review for the 2015 conference. The English military and political leader experienced several illnesses during his adult years including boils, an attack of gout, dysentery, and a possible kidney stone. However, he managed to survive until the age of 59 when, in August 1658, he began complaining of intermittent bouts of gastrointestinal and back pain. These continued for several weeks during which he also developed a sore throat. In early September he seemed to briefly rally only to suffer a relapse and suddenly expire. Included are descriptions of his various illnesses and a detailed account of his final days. Dr. Saint concluded that Cromwell died of a combination of malaria and typhoid fever caused by Salmonella infection.
