Description
An undated black-and-white engraving depicting a rural tooth extraction taking place outside a village building. At the center of the scene, a distressed patient reclines across the laps and knees of two men who restrain him while a village smith uses forceps to extract a tooth. Several figures look on, including two smiling spectators standing in a doorway and two children observing from a nearby window and yard. Blacksmithing tools, including a horseshoe, hammer, and anvil, are scattered around the scene, emphasizing the smith's dual role as both metalworker and tooth drawer. The title “The Country Tooth Drawer” appears beneath the image, along with the imprint “Printed and Published by W. Davison, Alnwick.” This engraving illustrates a common practice before the emergence of professional dentistry, when villagers often sought tooth extractions from local blacksmiths.
