Item Dr. Gideon B. Smith, UMSOM Class of 1840: 17-Year Cicada Expert(2021-06-09) Wink, TaraDr. Gideon B. Smith graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1840. Smith had an active career in newspapers, entomology, and as an inventor and entrepreneur prior to attending and graduating from medical school. He also studied Cicadas from 1817 until his death in 1867 and is credited with identifying the cycle of the 17-year cicada or Brood X.Item UMB’s Championship Basketball Team, 1904-1905(2021-03-24) Wink, TaraIn the fall of 1904, the University of Maryland formed its first Basketball team in Baltimore.
