    Dr. Gideon B. Smith, UMSOM Class of 1840: 17-Year Cicada Expert

    Dr. Gideon B. Smith graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1840. Smith had an active career in newspapers, entomology, and as an inventor and entrepreneur prior to attending and graduating from medical school. He also studied Cicadas from 1817 until his death in 1867 and is credited with identifying the cycle of the 17-year cicada or Brood X.

    UMB’s Championship Basketball Team, 1904-1905

    In the fall of 1904, the University of Maryland formed its first Basketball team in Baltimore. The team was composed of members from the schools of medicine and dentistry. The team played against Johns Hopkins University to become State Champions.

    Vaccine lessons from the early 1800s: The Boon of Jenner and Covid-19

    COVID-19 vaccines allowed the world to open back up after months of quarantine, social distancing, and masking. This post traces the history of vaccines and the hesitancy to vaccinate from Edward Jenner's discovery of the smallpox vaccine. The post highlights quotes from the School of Medicine Early Disserations collection to show how vaccines improve the quality of life for people as well as explain the hesitancy of some to get them.

    Happy 275th Birthday Dr. John Crawford!

    A collection purchased from the estate of Dr. John Crawford after his death in 1813 is credited with the founding of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library on the University of Maryland, Baltimore's campus. This post highlights the life of Dr. John Crawford on what would have been his 275th Birthday in 2021.

    Remembering the Davidge Elm on Arbor Day

    The post honors a long standing Elm Tree, known as the Davidge Elm, on UMB's Campus. The tree stood from the early days of the campus until it was cut down, due to poor health, in 2001. Today a younger Elm, grown from the a Davidge Elm seed, stands in the same location outside of Davidge Hall.
